It is used for the study of the lungs and different structures of the thorax (mediastinum, lymph nodes, ribs,...).
For its correct preparation, a previous fasting of 6 hours is needed (3 in diabetic patients), not being necessary the suspension of any treatment and being able to drink water during the 6 hours of fasting.
The examination time inside the machine does not usually exceed 15 minutes.
It is not as frequent as in the abdominal study, but sometimes, in the study of the thorax it is also necessary to inject intravenous contrast.
